Dong Hoi is the capital city of Quang Binh province, which is in the north central coast of Vietnam. If you are on the North - South long way, it will not be difficult to recognize Dong Hoi, which is situated in the heart of Quang Binh province. Its nickname is the city of roses.
Like all provinces in the north and north central of Vietnam, there are four distinct seasons in Dong Hoi. In the spring, it is cool, humid and foggy. Although the city is located by sea, its climate is subject to drought in the summer. This is largely due to the dry southwest wind from Gulf of Thailand. It is rainy in the fall but the weather is nice. In the winter, due to the northeast wind blowing from Chinese mainland, the temperature may go down below 10 degrees Celsius, and it may be rainy.
Dong Hoi is not a powerful city, so we can only consider it as a bird with soft and wet feather that is being fed by the mother bird and it will fly up one day. During recent years, the economy of the city has grown rapidly and the people’ living standards is more and more raised. Dong Hoi becomes the centre of politics, economy, culture, science and technology of Quang Binh province.
Dong Hoi with long – standing cultural character, combat achievements, rivers, sand dunes, architectures, eating and drinking… became a destination of tourists. Nhat Le beach attracts so many souls and eyes of poets, writers and painters. It is an unending source of inspiration of people who are far from their country. Hotels, guest – houses along the seacoast make sea in the night more beautiful and splendid.
In Dong Hoi, there are many hotels and guest - houses from 1 to 3 - star hotels like Cosevco Hotel, Saigon - Quang Binh Hotel and especially the 4 - star resort of Sun Spa Resort in My Canh. Depending on your financial resources, you can freely choose a place to rest. It takes you 10 driving - minute over Nhat Le Bridge to get to My Canh tourist area. You will stray into a fairyland to take a rest, swim in the sea, enjoy Vietnamese and European – style food, travel by boat, parachute at sea and a series of special entertainment services. Arriving in Bao Ninh fishing village, you can enjoy charm folk songs, a tempestuous Cau Ngu Festival at any time, or you will be ecstatic at dances which is performed by village girls. At Bao Ninh village, you can burn incense for the hero Nguyen Thi Suot, or go to Dong Hoi Market Wharf to burn incense and take photographs by Me Suot stone statue. You can also meet people who are contemporary of her to hear about feat of arms of this lofty woman.
From Dong Hoi, you can easily visit World Heritage Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, The Bang Spa and go back up the street number 20 to burn incense at eight young women Cave or go along Gianh River to know more about the beauty, manners and customs and people of Quang Binh. You can also visit an original tourist area, Quang Binh Old Village where you can be brought back the war years in Quang Binh with trenches, undergound infirmaries, kindergartens and classes….
There are some historical monuments which you can visit such as: Quang Binh Old Citadel Gate on Hung Vuong Street, Thay Rampart, and Dong Hoi Wall…. Coming to Dong Hoi, you can not skip an important relic: where Uncle Ho stopped in 1957 when he visited Dong Hoi – Quang Binh. Giao Te old base area used to be the place that Cuba President Fidel Castro took a rest and the place which welcomed Uncle Ho and high Party and State leaders in time of anti – American war.
Before you leave Dong Hoi, don’t forget to buy some simple present for your family and your friends such as a packet of tasty dried squids, a pack of shrimps, a bottle of delicious fish sauce, a white hat, and a small catus which is planted in a ceramic vase…
Although Dong Hoi is changing for the better, people in the city are unchanged. They are fine, honest, nature - loving, hospitable and very kind. A smile of a vender makes passers - by a cheer, a kindly person gives somebody directions, an old man is watering the flowers and a child is raising a swallow which has bumped against the window…. People in Dong Hoi are like that.
My hometown - Dong Hoi, which is the city of roses, poetry, music with hospitable, honest and enjoying life people, is smiling at you. If you visit Dong Hoi once, you will love it like me and natives of the city.
